On June 25-26, the Middle East Centre organized a conference in Beirut “A New Vision for Lebanon – The Post-Election Landscape: Reality and Reform.” The conference was held at the Smallville Hotel in the Mathaf district of the city and was live streamed.

Adopting a social-political perspective, the conference brought together a diverse range of participants from across the national spectrum, including new members of parliament, local and community figures, activists, representatives of educational institutions, social movements, unions, and non-governmental organizations. The participants engaged in panel discussions, moderated by leading journalists, around four key themes: “the Lebanese national idea,” “democratic institutions and the rule of law,” “women in Lebanese political life,” and “the policies needed for a new Lebanon.”

The event was organized with research professor Greg Reichberg as project leader. He and Harry Tzimitras, director of the PRIO Cyprus Center, gave opening comments at the conference.

This event is intended to be the first in a series of conferences that aim to facilitate dialogue in Lebanon around topics essential to creating a modern vision for a better Lebanon and to encourage consensus-building around the reforms needed to realize this vision.
