What is Russia up to in the Middle East?

​‘Russia Exploits Middle East to Subvert Europe’, writes Pavel Baev in the 27 January edition of the Eurasia Daily Monitor. Since then, US President Donald Trump has launched his Middle East peace plan, and Russian reactions have been modest. Baev comments on Russia and the US peace plan:

Russia has reacted unenthusiastically but not entirely negatively to the announcement of US President Donald Trump's plan for resolving the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. Since the start of the year, President Vladimir Putin, while busy with reshuffling his government and revising Russia's Constitution, has devoted much time and effort to spinning various intrigues in the Middle East. From Libya to Afghanistan, Moscow seeks to make itself a key party to conflict manipulation, and its key aim in the new stage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will be to secure a prominent role for itself.
